FAQ

Emergency Contraception Pills or the “morning after pill” are a post-intercourse contraceptive method. Unlike most other contraceptive methods, ECPs are not preventative in nature (i.e. you take them after unprotected sexual intercourse or when contraception has failed).

Emergency contraceptive pills (ECPs) aka the morning-after pills delay an egg's release from the female body's ovaries. If an egg is not released to the uterus, it can’t be fertilised by the sperm. If the sperm and egg cannot meet, there is no pregnancy.

These pills are called “Emergency” contraception for a reason, they are not intended to be a regular form of contraception. It is advised not to make using ECPs a habit, however, it can be taken more than once in a menstrual cycle if needed.

ECPs don't continue to protect you against pregnancy – if you have unprotected sex at any time after taking the emergency pill, you can become pregnant.

You can get the emergency contraceptive pill in advance of having unprotected sex if:
- you're worried about your contraceptive method failing
- you're going somewhere they may be inaccessible
- You want to be extra cautious and keep one in your medical box

Taking additional doses of an ECP won’t make it more effective. If you’ve already taken the required dose, you don’t need to take an additional dose on the same day or the day after.

No! One of the most common misconceptions about emergency contraceptive pills is that they cause permanent infertility. The scientific community has disproved this claim multiple times.
